5 insurance exclusions business owners miss

Most coverage problems hide in a few lines nobody reads. Here are five to check.

Most owners read the price and the first page of a policy. The gaps usually live further back, in the exclusions. Here are five that catch people off guard.

1. Is flood covered by my property policy?

Usually not. Most commercial property and package policies exclude flood. In a region with rivers and levees, like much of Sacramento, that’s worth checking. Flood coverage is often a separate policy.

2. What happens if my building sits empty?

Many policies limit or cut coverage once a building has been vacant for a set time, often around 60 days. If a unit will sit empty between tenants, tell your agent before the clock runs out.

3. Am I covered if an employee steals?

Often not under a standard policy. Employee theft usually needs its own coverage, sometimes called crime coverage or a fidelity bond.

4. Does my liability policy cover my own tools?

No. General liability covers harm to others. Your tools and equipment need their own coverage, often called inland marine. That matters most for gear that rides in a truck or sits at a job site.

5. What if an employee crashes their own car on a work errand?

Their personal policy may not protect your business. Hired and non-owned auto coverage fills that gap. It’s low cost for many businesses and easy to miss.

How do I check my own policy?

Find the section called exclusions and read it slowly. Or let someone do it with you. Oscar reviews policies line by line and explains each gap in plain words.
